The Brief

Unicef, the international children’s organisation hosts elaborate annual fundraisers in world-class cities, raising millions of dollars for their children’s charity work. Because of Plico’s experience with large-scale aerial origami operations, the organisers employed us to design, build and install a five story tall mobile in the prestigious Gaysorn shopping mall in downtown Bangkok.

The Execution

Fifty cranes were constructed from sheets of paper ranging in size from 2m square, down to 50cm square. Each bird had one of our custom designed wire harnesses inserted into the model during construction. Once the bird is folded these cannot be seen but enable us to firmly attach the rigging lines without risk of them tearing through the paper. Electric hoists lowered a metal grid down from the atrium ceiling and the birds hung in a spiral formation to reach down through 5 stories of the mall for a dramatic effect.
